Most Overseas Trained Teachers (OTTs) can teach in the UK for the first four years of their stay in the UK, whether you have UK Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or not. Many teachers are eligible for QTS with no further assessment, and for others, there are different routes.
Overseas teachers who do not have QTS can teach in maintained schools and non-maintained special schools in England without QTS for up to 4 years under the ‘4- year rule’.
This rule applies to overseas teachers who
1) have qualified as a teacher outside of the UK
2) have completed a course of teacher training that is recognized by the competent authority of that country
3) are employed in maintained schools and non-maintained special schools, but not a pupil referral unit
If you were qualified in the EU, USA, New Zealand, Canada, Australia, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Norway, you are eligible to apply to the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) for QTS without having to complete any further assessments or qualifications. If you pass these checks, then you will be awarded UK QTS. The normally takes between 2 and 4 weeks.
Do not worry if you do not have QTS. You can still follow all other traditional paths to get a UK teaching qualification (PGCE, BEd). The fastest and most popular way is the Assessment Only route.
